Door handles and pull handles – which should you choose?

Handles and pull handles have noteworthy distinctive advantages you need to consider when choosing how to open an external door. They affect the aesthetics of the building and the door and bear on the convenience of its use. What should you consider when choosing between a handle and a pull handle?

The door handle is the most common way to open a door. With the advent of pull handles, otherwise known as entablatures, the door handle has become the classic solution. Pull handles, on the other hand, which are associated with modern office buildings, are increasingly appearing as an addition to external doors in private homes. What are the advantages of both solutions and when should you opt for them?

The first criterion is the building style for which you choose the exterior door. You should complement a classic design of a house or building with a classic door, which implies a classic handle. Even if its form is minimalist or modern, it certainly will work better in houses with a country, Mediterranean or English style.

On the other hand, in the design of houses and buildings in a modern, minimalist, Scandinavian or eclectic style, as well as buildings with a futuristic design - museums, galleries, opera houses and office buildings - aluminium doors with pull handles in a simple or rich design are ideal.

The door style should also influence the choice between a handle or a pull handle. The heavier the door and the larger the leaf, the more desirable it is to choose a pull handle. It is thus a fitting idea to use it wherever you choose aluminium or PVC doors. The pull handle can take the shape of a wave, an arch or a straight line, be rectangular or have a circular cross-section. It can also vary in length, what allows it to perfectly match the style of the building and the door.

Choosing a door pull handle for an exterior door is a good idea for those who are constantly worried about leaving their door open when they leave the house. To close a door with a grab bar, all you have to do when leaving is to pull at them. Self-closing means that you will need a key to open it again. This is a great convenience for forgetful and busy people. The impossibility of leaving the door open even for a moment makes this security feature a real nuisance for potential burglars.

It is worth noting, however, that what is an advantage of pull handles for some, others may see it as a disadvantage. A gust of wind, a quick trip out with the garbage, or coming home from shopping with many bags can make it difficult, if not impossible, to get inside if the key is not within reach or, worse, left at home.

In the case of a classic handle, the problem of shutting the keys inside or opening the door when your hands are busy is virtually non-existent. For this reason, if you want to use a pull handle on an external door, you often also fit an auto-release electric door strike, which allows you to temporarily lock the door and open it with just a push. However, this may carry some risks. For this reason, it would also be a good idea to fit a fingerprint scanner, which can successfully replace a key and ensure that accidentally slamming the door shut is not a problem.
